Physical Description of Dusky Conure
The Dusky Conure is a small sized bird that displays a mostly green body with yellow green underparts. Its bill is black with a bare white eye ring. Juvenile Dusky Conures have darker green underparts with minimal yellow accents. Adults generally reach 11 inches in length. Temperament and Behavior
Dusky Conure is highly demanded for its fun and well-mannered personality. In fact, it is one of the most behaved species that can even tolerate constant handling by humans. This is the reason why it is a perfect companion pet for both children and adults. However, due to the fact that it loves human interaction, owners are required to provide more than enough bonding time. Clearly, it is not recommended for people who are extremely busy with work or other activities.
In the wild, Ducky Conures thrive in flocks, which makes them highly sociable. Because of this, your pet also demands a lot of time playing or having outdoor activities. It is recommended to let it out from its cage for a couple of hours each day to maintain proper heath. To increase play time, you can introduce various toys that are specifically made for birds. If budget is limited, you can just provide plastic ball or safe wood chips for it to peck. The important thing is that all toys should be clean, safe and must not be too small for your bird to swallow.
In terms of breeding, this species is considered easy breeders because of their willingness to mate. It usually produces clutches with 3 to 5 eggs, which must be incubated for almost a month. Baby Conures are born in white color with touches of grey. As they approach maturity, the colors darken and eventually turn into green. When methods of breeding are practiced in the correct manner, a pair of Dusky Conjure can produce more than 3 hutches in a year. This is one of the reasons why this species is a favorite by bird breeders.
Health and Care
One of the most important factors in maintaining your pet’s health is proper diet. Aside from high quality bird pellets, you must include a mix of nutritious seeds including sunflower, safflower, milo, small popcorn, oats, etc. Take note that this mixture must not go over 70% of its total daily diet. To further get nutrition, you must also include green leafy vegetables and fruits. Some of the most recommended include lettuce, carrots, pump-kin, sweet patties, squash, and spinach. However, fruits that contain loads of sugar and acids must be given sparingly to prevent risks of developing health issues. In addition, always make sure that all given food items are clean and fresh.
Another important factor in maintaining proper health is constant supply of fresh and clean water. This is required especially in locations that have humid and dry weather. After its daily activities, your pet needs to replenish all the water lost in its system to prevent dehydration and other medical conditions. The most effective way to ensure that it is properly hydrated is to provide a water basin that is strongly attached to its cage or enclosure. After a few hours, remove any left over water and replace with a new batch to prevent drinking contaminated water. Doing this will minimize the risks of acquiring digestive issues which are common in most bird species.
Similar with water, you must also remove all leftover foods like pellets and seeds to prevent diarrhea or bacterial infection. Make it a habit to immediately remove leftovers after eating.
Dusky Conure loves to chew. When not properly trained or taught, it can chew and cause havoc on home appliances and furniture. Fortunately, due to its high intelligence, your pet can easily be trained on things it can and cannot play with or chew.
History and Background
During its early years, Dusky Conure was not really popular due to the fact that most people prefer to domesticate birds that are more colorful and attractive. In 1980’s, this species peaked in popularity as various countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil allowed exportation. Today, it enjoys a steady demand as people began to appreciate its friendly and fun personality.
