Why is chocolate harmful to birds? For starters, birds have a very sensitive digestive system, which means that when they eat food items that are harmful to their bodies such as chocolates, the effects can either be severe diarrhea or continuous vomiting. Most often than not, these symptoms are not experienced for very long periods and do not usually lead to death. But when excessive amounts of chocolates are eaten, these symptoms will eventually affect the nervous system and cause fatal seizures.

Aside from pure chocolates, food items that contain traces of chocolates must also be avoided. When you pet bird accidentally eats even the slightest amount of chocolate, immediately give it water. In the wild, birds often eat various kinds of fruits. Although this is a fact, you must always be extra careful when serving fruits especially those that contain cyanide like apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, and pears. When consumed, even the slightest trace of this harmful substance can cause various health issues.

The proper way to serve these fruits is by carefully cutting into small portions and throw away the core or areas near the seeds where cyanide is present. But before serving this way, it is also very important to thoroughly clean these fruits. Aside from cyanide, pesticides and other chemicals that were used to grow these fruits can also be very harmful to your pet’s health.

Another harmful fruit that must be avoided is avocado, which has been proven to potentially cause heart failure and cardiac arrest when eaten by birds.

Salty Food Items

Similar to humans, excessive consumption of salt and salty foods can lead to dehydration and kidney diseases in birds. Because of their small size, even a small amount of salt can already have a negative impact on your pet’s health. If your bird accidentally consumes salt, immediately bring it to a vet to get proper treatment. Although your pet may seem able to regain normal state, the full extent of the effects of salt consumption especially when consumed in excessive levels become more obvious in time.


Although it would be nice to make your pet as your new drinking buddy, alcohol can be fatal to birds. When consumed, alcohol can immediately suppress the function of major body organs, which can lead to death. In addition to alcoholic drinks, coffee must also be avoided by all means. Caffeine has been proven to cause various heart issues in birds including arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, hyperactivity, and increased heartbeat. When any of these drinks are accidentally consumed, immediately bring your pet to a vet.

Dry or Raw Beans

Another food item that must never be given is dry or uncooked beans, which contain a harmful substance called Hemagglutinin that is very dangerous to birds. However, when properly cooked, this substance will no longer affect your pet’s health. When serving beans, make sure to cook for several minutes and use only the freshest ingredients.
